How We Treat Pediatric Dental Emergencies

  • Same-Day Appointment: As soon as you realize that your child is having a dental emergency, call our practice and let us know what happened. One of our team members can schedule an emergency appointment for you; they can also give you tips for caring for your child’s smile at home.
  • Emergency Exam: The first thing we’ll do during your child’s emergency appointment is examine their mouth. Our goal will be to determine the true source of the problem as well as how severe it is.
  • Review Findings: We’ll explain what we found while looking at your child’s mouth, then walk you through the available treatment options. Before you have to make any decisions regarding your little one’s care, we’ll make sure you have an estimate of the cost as well as an idea of how long it will take.
  • Get the Care Your Child Needs: With a treatment plan agreed upon, all that’s left is for us to take whatever steps are needed to help your child regain a healthy, pain-free grin!

Understanding the Cost of Pediatric Dental Emergencies

There are many different treatments that we may recommend as part of your child’s emergency dental care. The specific services performed, the possible use of sedation to keep your child calm, and other factors will have an impact on the overall cost. We’ll always be transparent with you regarding the financial aspect of your child’s care.

Keys to Preventing Pediatric Dental Emergencies

You can lower your child’s risk for dental emergencies by helping them adopt the right oral health habits as early in life as possible. Make sure that their teeth are being brushed at least twice a day. You should also get your child started on flossing once their teeth start fitting close together. Remember to bring your little one into our office at least two times a year for routine checkups and cleanings.

Pediatric Dental Emergency FAQs

What Does Throbbing Tooth Pain Mean?

Throbbing tooth pain is often a symptom of a cracked tooth, a cavity, or an infection. So, don’t take the “wait and see” approach; contact us ASAP to schedule an emergency exam with Dr. Vahid. In addition to reviewing your child’s X-rays, she will ask them a few questions about their symptoms and conduct an oral exam. Then, she can determine what’s causing their discomfort, share her treatment recommendations, and answer any questions you have.

Should I Bring My Child to the ER First for Dental Emergencies?

If your child has broken their jaw, they sustained a serious cut to their face or mouth, they are having trouble breathing, or they are experiencing any other potentially life-threatening symptoms, you should take them to the ER. We don’t recommend the same approach if they have a toothache, they knocked out a tooth, or they have a loose filling because hospitals don’t typically have dentists on staff. Instead, call our East Cobb dental team.

Important note: We offer morning, lunchtime, afternoon, and weekend hours, so there’s a good chance that we’ll be able to schedule an emergency exam for your child the same day you call!

Can a Chipped Tooth Repair on Its Own?

Unfortunately, enamel cannot regenerate. So, if your child chips one of their teeth, it won’t grow back. Quite the opposite: the tooth may chip further, develop an infection, or cause serious sensitivity. For all of those reasons, we recommend scheduling an appointment at our office within the next day or two.

Is a Knocked-Out Baby Tooth a Dental Emergency?

Yes, especially if your child’s surrounding teeth and gums were damaged as well. Remember, even though baby teeth fall out on their own eventually, they serve an important purpose when your child is young. In addition to giving them a beautiful, complete smile, they help them eat nutritious foods and enunciate clearly. So, don’t hesitate to call us if they accidentally knock out one of their teeth while playing in the backyard, participating in sports, etc.

How Can I Help My Child Sleep with Tooth Pain?

Is your child having trouble sleeping because their tooth hurts? If so, you’ll be happy to hear that there are a few things you can do to alleviate their discomfort. First, have them rinse with warm saltwater (this will help alleviate inflammation while also reducing the risk of infection). Second, give them an OTC pain reliever for children about 30 minutes before bed. Third, prop their head up on a few pillows so blood doesn’t rush to their head while they are sleeping.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Emergency Dentistry?

Sometimes, dental insurance providers do cover a portion of the cost of emergency dentistry. So, don’t hesitate to take a look at your plan to see what is and isn’t covered. If you have any questions during this process, you can always give us a call as well. We’re happy to work with many of the nation’s leading providers, including Aetna, Guardian, and Humana.
